If I'm by myself, I never stutter. If I have even the slightest expectation that somebody might hear me, like recording a voicemail, I'll stutter again. It really is that expectation we're going to stutter and receive a negative response from our family and peers that exacerbates our speech. There's no real tips except trying to get a handle on that anxiety but that's far easier said than done. It's seemingly an inherent stress response in people with stutters.
