I agree with the OP that many stutterers are smarter than average. From a young age, the constant mental gymnastics and vocabulary it takes to minimize stuttering is a cognitive exercise. All day every day we're subconsciously planning conversations, swapping words and using various tricks we have developed, and I think over time it does lead to better than average intelligence.
