You're entire premise is flawed. There's a ton of money to make on drugs for lifelong disorders and diseases. Literally all of them. Alzheimer's is one of the holy grails for pharma companies. They can charge a LOT for it. Even stuff like stuttering would make a lot of money. It's not underfunded. There are drugs for stuttering in trials already. It's just that a lot of them fail. If anything nationalizing it would underfund research. The gov would prioritize treating illnesses that kill people like cancer instead throwing money at stuff like stuttering since there'd be no reason to research that without a profit motive.
