You are going to need a lot of luck. Luckily, I know how to get lucky; It's through practice. The only way to get good at phone interviews is to practice. Practice before the interview. Imagine what interview questions you will be asked and have someone help ask them to you. First in person, then on the phone. Then apply to a bunch of jobs and just practice. Most interviewers ask the same questions so you will learn what they want to know, and you'll practice those answers to perfection. dont try to be bland. Try to formulate answers before hand that are different and make you stand out. Trying to be spontaneous when you have an unpredictable stutter is not a good look. Eg: where do you see yourself 5 years form now? "I have 3, 5- year plans going. one is personal, one is financial, one is educational. Educationally, I want to graduate with my Phd in \_\_\_\_\_\_\_ from \_\_\_\_\_\_\_ by \_\_\_\_\_. Financially, I would like to own my own home/be debt free/ etc. And personally, I want to travel to all the countries that begin with I. What countries are those? "India, Iceland, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy and Ivory Coast." Now you are in control and the interviewer will remember you as the guy who knows that they are 9 countries that start with I. Customize it. be specific in all your answers. And have preplanned what you want to say. Also be you, dont try to pander to the interviewer. if they like your music, they'll dance. If they dont, thats ok, walk away and dodge the bullet. never ever go where you may not be wanted or worse, unappreciated. Finally,go for the best job you really want. In my opinion, you should apply to the best companies in your field. Believe it not, there aren't a sea of applicants because the really weak candidates dont bother. And the people who work there are more erudite and won't hold a stutter against you. You'll have practiced bunch. Also, when you shoot for the stars, the universe conspires to make it happen. So, look at the past failures not as failures- but as practice. And also realize, that most people have to apply for hundreds of jobs to finally get he one that fits just right. 2 bad phone interviews is nothing. My uncle applied for 1500 jobs before he landed a position. He is now 98 yrs old and rich af after retiring form that same company after 76 years. He doesn't look at those 1499 as fails, but as practice.
