A Brazilian stutterer wants to know your opinion on "overcoming stuttering" Hey, there! I'm a 18-year-old Brazilian, I'm studying English in my country and I stutter as long as I can remember. In Portuguese, we say "gago" or "pessoa que gagueja" (PWS). I've heard in my whole life about "overcoming stuttering". But the burning question is: how could we overcome something that hasn't a cure and that we can't even control it? Assuming that stuttering has not a cure (speech therapy can reduce your stuttering, but it will still be there), would overcoming it be trying to hide it from people by using speech techniques (although most of the times it might be impossible) and appear not to be a person who stutters... ...or would "overcome stuttering" be putting yourself in situations that fluent people easily do (like college presentations and have a good socializing with new people) despite of your stuttering and also not being ashamed to stutter when doing these things? What is "overcome stuttering" after all? I'd love to know what the community thinks about this subject. Leave your comment and thank you for reading!
