Well, you see, that "advice" is very stale and not really in keeping with various stutter approaches. I think you'll find the field has since moved on. The reason "everyone" tells you the same is that it's been a generic advice floating around society for a long while, but it's not actually tied to any substantiated theory. It's just something people are in the habit of saying when they hear someone stutter. So, again, you may be doing things that you would benefit from not doing in that way. There may be other approaches you can use to improve your stutter.
