The truth is there are different “types” of stutterers. It impacts people differently. No decent person will judge you for your stutter, but many PWS are unable to convey most of their thoughts, using non-verbals that convey their intended meaning. I worked with kids with special needs for years, and developed a debilitating stutter during that time. I had extreme panic before making phone calls, meetings my new clients, colleagues, announcing my name at meetings, etc. Despite doing what I loved and being very skilled, I started getting physical manifestations of my stress. I work in the field so I strongly believe it’s not helpful to tell a kid I work with “even though you are terrified, don’t have the skills, I promise you’ll be fine.” I certainly do not say “just give up”. Rather, I work with them to get the skills, address their legitimate fear, take baby steps etc.
