I think that people that refer themselves for therapy make the most progress because they are motivated and want to change. Ask your therapist for homework/practice assignments to do between sessions because it is difficult to duplicate the social environment of speaking in an individual session. Make sure that your therapist has extensive experience with the emotional side of stuttering because that is the area most people struggle with. I am a speech language pathologist who happens to think that stuttering is part genetic and part physical/emotional and that both sides of the problem need equal treatment. I wish you the best of luck and applaud you for wanting to improve yourself through dedication and hard work!
