I think Alexythimia may be a big contributor to stuttering for some, if not all people that stutter Definition: Alexithymia is characterized by an impaired ability to be aware of, explicitly identify, and describe one's feelings (Nemiah et al., 1976). So I believe the inability to properly label and identify one’s emotional state, and then identify a resolution to resolving these emotions may be the fuel for stuttering. Most of us I assume have some gene or set of genes that is turned on, and somehow leads to stuttering. But the question is, what fuels the gene to express itself?? I believe we can have genes that lead to stuttering but not stutter, in the same way that a car without fuel won’t drive. I believe emotion is the main culprit. Emotion is largely the fuel for stuttering. And when someone cannot properly have a way of dealing with emotions from recognition of them, to expression of them, to prevention of unnecessary ones, it can lead to confusion and muscle tension. And thus a ground for stuttering to take place. Alexythimia is known to be associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but not everyone that has Alexythimia is Autistic. I am though and finding out helped me so much with my stuttering. I’m planning to read this book, and I feel it could be very helpful. Thought I’d share these thoughts.
