I also stutter on my name… my first, middle and last name. And I too have avoided meeting new people, as a child when I made friends on holiday I used to tell them my name was something else (that I could always easily say). As I’ve gotten older, when I need to say my name like to a receptionist or whatever, I always ask for a pen and paper. For me as well, I can say my name, but I struggle more when I presume a persons attitude, it’s easier to say around someone who is giving warmth rather than someone who seems grumpy (if you get what I mean). Also, I can say it when I’m not put on the spot, like if it’s a flowing conversation then 80% of the time I can say my name. When you’re stressed or anxious, there’s restricted blood flow to parts of the brain which increase the frequency of the stutter… I’m going to look into treatment for anxiety to try and combat my stutter as it is intensified when I’m anxious which then I just give up speaking. I think you find your own ways of getting around it. I’ve never met anyone who’s been nasty in regard to me asking for a pen and paper lol. Speech therapy can only do so much teaching tips and tricks to grasp some kind of control, but the stutter always shines through.
