I have a rather ”palatable” stutter. It’s mostly repetitions of sounds, the repetitions don’t last long, and the frequency varies a lot. Sometimes I get repetitions nearly every word, sometimes it barely happens at all. I did go to speech therapy for a while when I was like 9 and learned some useful techniques, but I sucked at practicing them after it was decided I didn’t need the therapy anymore, so they never really stuck with me, but here’s the thing: Only one person has ever been genuinely mean to me about it. Sure, I’ve gotten some ignorant comments from several people, but only one person has ever tried to hurt me on purpose because of my stutter (I did get bullied for a while, but for other reasons), and he was shot down quickly. In my experience, no one cares that I stutter. If they do, no one is saying anything about it. Except a teacher I had once, who just thought I was super anxious until I explained my situation. Maybe I’ve just gotten incredibly lucky in that regard, or maybe people in general don’t care as much as we think they do.
