In my experience, these jobs can be oddly hard to get if you go in cold like that, regardless of a stutter. And I agree taking half the salary for a job that is probably minimum wage would raise red flags. Covering a wide net and using any connections are the way to go. It can’t hurt to try to talk to someone like a manager, if done properly. I got my first retail job because the manager recognized me from high school- simple as that.
