I thought I was the only stutterer/blocker who found it nearly impossible to say his own name. Here's a funny consequence of this situation: Need to call bank or credit card company for some account reason. The worst reason is security reasons. This is because the customer reps have training to look out for potential call fraud. Great. So I would call, keypad my way to the security dept and nervously wait. Going over my script 20 times. This is useless because: Agent: Hi to whom am I speaking? Me: Mr. XXXXXX Agent: Could you please state your full name to protect the security of your acct? Me: {silence}... {Makes sounds, tics, squeaks} um . Um. Ummm. T-T-T- umm umm.. Agent: My apologies sir if I wasn't clear. Could you please state your full name on the account? Thank you Me: T-T-huuuu um ummm I-I- {silence) Agent: My apologies sir. I'm going to put you on hold for just a moment! Me: (great. Here it comes, like clockwork):sigh: New Agent: Hi Mr XXXX, I'm Barry, security coordinator for yadda yadda. How can I assist you today? Me: Um well, I I was calling, yadda yadda,.... and I need t-t-t-o {silence.. long dead air, then at light speed} resetmywebloginpasswordiforgotimsorryresetneed Agent: Not a problem Mr. XXXX Could you state your full acct number and full name? Me: um um um (word salad) Agent: Sir I'm going to place you on hol- Me: No you see, I know my name I I just - nuts to this! Click. Pick another damn card to use. Pay off orig card. Never ever call them again. Receive a letter in the mail to verify info for the security of my account, please call us at.... Me: Aw crap! Lol. All that effort, and all I end up doing every time is INCREASING the suspicion on my account my damn self. When I finally manage to say my name, they still judge my general nervousness and stutters as a sign of someone nervous about committing FRAUD. Yeah, I have my pop call for me and pretend to be me for the first 2 sentences. Then I take over. THIS this is the life of a blocker stutterer. And don't even mention what happens when a relative meets my significant other for the first time and i can't say their damn name so it looks like I don't care too much about this person since I can't remember their dang name, so it appears. Anyway, thanks for listening if you did. I'm new here. But been blocking severely for over 30 years. Usually on words beginning w vowels or hard consonants. Major facial tics as well when hung up. My favorite word if judged by frequency is "like" with "um" in second place when I'm blocking. Cheers!
