I totally understand. People don't understand how mentally taxing it is to try to speak if you stutter. Every syllable is like doing a math problem in your head. Never let it hold you back. Obviously, I'll never be an auctioneer or the guy that does the countdown for the space shuttle liftoff. But I've been in the military, and worked for the government for over 20 years. One thing that helps is to have a sense of humor about it. Another thing that helps me is before I start talking to someone new, I say "By the way, I have a moderate stutter." It breaks the ice with it, and you don't get weird looks.
