Non-stuttering family member told me “if you really wanted to fix your stutter, you would’ve.” I was told by a non-stuttering family member that “if you really wanted to fix your stutter, you would’ve.” This statement, especially from a family member, has left me both angry and depressed. I have gone to speech therapy many times. I have tried. I’m sure many people think I’m an idiot or just lazy and unprepared when I can’t complete two sentences in a row and I have to pause for several seconds or just start the sentence over again. They must think that I’m wasting their time, that I don’t know what I’m talking about, that I haven’t tried my best to make myself a PRESENTABLE HUMAN BEING in social situations while constantly being anxious 24/7 to the point where it feels like I age 10 years every 10 months. The psychiatrists do nothing, they just say “keep a positive attitude” and “reflect on your feelings.” I just can’t do this forever. But yes, if I wanted to fix it I would. Clearly it’s my own fault. I must LIKE not being able to speak clearly and fluently. I must LIKE that my career is and will continue suffering because of it. I must LOVE the stares and attention I get from friends and total strangers who think my IQ is half of what it really is. Yeah, I sure as hell do love it. My point is, be careful what you say to others, please.
