Stuttering Organizations I’m conducting research on stuttering organizations, such as the Stuttering Foundation of America, National Stuttering Association, SAY, American Institute of Stuttering, FRIENDS, and I’d greatly appreciate your input. Whether you’ve had positive or negative interactions with these organizations, your experiences are valuable. Here are a few questions to consider: 1. What do you think of their online presence and messaging? Any critiques? Feedback? Things you wish they did or didn’t do? 2. What about interactions you’ve had with them: challenges or critiques? 3. What were your experiences like with the leadership and staff members? 4. Are there any noteworthy weird experiences or stories you’d like to share or have heard of? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments or send me a message if you’d like to keep it private. I am not affiliated with any of these organizations- but I have heard complaints about the leadership of Stuttering Foundation and National Stuttering Association. The financials of SAY and NSA are also noteworthy. Good stories are easy to come by. But why are so many leaders of these orgs fluent speakers who aren’t even SLPs? Very few started off that way, so what changed? Do any of them seem to silence individuals who stutter? While none of these organizations seem to be anywhere near Autism Speaks levels of toxic, I am certain some harm is being done and people who stutter have not been publicly sharing, due to the good the organization has done. Tides are turning in the disability communities, but we need honesty and accountability to make that happen. Thank you.
