One conversation changed my life Guys, sometimes one conversation is all it takes. I’m 17 years old. I play cello in a pretty advanced youth orchestra. We had a guest conductor who’s world-renowned. I love conducting, and decided to approach him and ask him what I should do to further advance my conducting passion. You can imagine how stressed I was, approaching a FAMOUS conductor with a BAD stutter. I’m sure even a fluent person would be nervous. I shook his hand, told him briefly I had a slight stutter, and started asking questions. I was almost completely fluent. He remarked he didn’t notice any stutter. He told me to conduct my school orchestra, and he gave me his card in case I had other questions. The present day: I conducted my school orchestra for a concert, which led to me getting interviewed for an article in the school newspaper, which led to people asking me to conduct more. This motivation led me to ask another well-known conductor for advice, and he said there’s an opening for an assistant conductor position in a good orchestra that I should try out for. Again, one conversation, no matter how fluent or stuttery you are, can completely change your life. It did for mine.
