A colleague told me I was brave for talking about my stutter during a conversation about it. I said I don't mind talking about it, seeing as I know a lot about it, but I think most people are afraid to mention it because it's often a source (or cause) of insecurity. They might be interested but won't ask in case it's seen as disrespectful, which is understandable. If I was curious about someone's disability I'd want to be sure they are comfortable talking about it before asking any questions. I'm quite open about it and some of my mental health issues but I never presume someone else is open to talking about their issues. If they bring something up, then I'm happy to have a conversation about it while being aware there might be certain aspects they don't want to talk about, and I respect that.
