One percent?

One percent? It really doesn't feel like 1 in 100 people stutter. I've been to three different schools with almost 500 students each. Never met another person with a stutter. I've met a lot of people through different hobbies, concerts and all of that. I definetly don't avoid being outside, so I meet and hear new people every day. Haven't met a single person other than me that stutters. I can think of a few reasons for this. For example people who stutter maybe don't talk much in public, have become good at hiding it, only have a minor stutter or the statistic also includes those who have grown out of it. But 1% still feels way too high. Does anyone have any insight on this?
