Hello! I am teacher and a stutterer. I’m so glad to hear that you’re not letting it hold you back from chasing your dreams. You got this!! It just takes practice and time. Once you’re confident with what you’re doing in the classroom things get easier. And by and by, when kids react to something new they do it with curiosity first, adults don’t give us the same. I always start every new class with explaining what a stutter is, I say I love talking about and if they have any questions I am happy to answer them. Once that’s done they sort of get over it. I have had kids mock me before and count my stutters, but I just followed through with a behaviour consequence like I would with any other student. Depending on the student, sometimes it works well to shame them for it in front of their peers. But I wouldn’t recommend that unless you have a fairly solid relationship with them first and know how that is going to go down, because you could lose them for the rest of the year. Good luck! Your stuttering gives you the gift of insight into struggles that students face. It will make you a better teacher. Edit: And for the others that are talking about “hands- on-techniques” this is true. We call this student cantered learning, where they take the onus in investigating the content. It’s definitely a great way to teach. However, you have to adapt to the needs of your students. This is a career long aspiration though. Differentiation can be easy, but it can also be really difficult and you will never have the same students twice. I teach mostly SWD and students who speak English as a second language, and I have to continually adapt my plans and schedules - sometimes mid lesson. You can’t rely on routine or scripts in a classroom. Know your content, understand how to adapt it and do your best. The rest comes with time :)
