Positive affirmations and reading aloud to yourself are a great place to start if you have time in the morning. I used to read aloud to myself every day before going to work and it really helped. If I didn’t have time to read I recorded myself on my phone while I was driving to work and listened to it when I got the chance during the day. I try to think like a fluent person. I’ve reduced my stutter to a level that’s barely noticeable and probably not noticeable at all to people who didn’t know me when I stuttered a lot, but I still have to remind myself to think like a fluent person. Just today I had a work function where we had to do an icebreaker where we say our name, position, and some stupid fact about ourselves. Usually a nightmare scenario for a stutterer. I felt old feelings of getting nervous about stuttering and I had to ask myself “is a fluent person sitting here wondering if they’ll be able to say their name”. Of course not, so I’m not going to do it either. It really does help.
