I’m in no position to advise you all, but here’s my advice… It may help somebody. I’m writing this post because when speaking to fellow stutterers, this is the one thing I tell people the most. I just did about 10 minutes ago. It’s sound like some new age bullshit, and it can take some self-administered therapy to achieve but it’s so so true in my life. It is ACCEPT YOUR STUTTER If you had a dodgy bent nose, or if you were bald. You would eventually just accept it, it’s part of you, you can’t change it so why beat yourself up about it. Screw it. I accept this pain in the ass way that I speak. Once you accept that it’s a part of you, you can truly start to stop caring about negative opinions from others on your stutter because there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s pointless worrying about it. Let them judge, they would probably judge you for something else if you didn’t stutter anyway. When you get to the point that it no longer matters what others think, your confidence will organically, naturally start to grow again to the point that you make friends, you talk a bit more, you go for that job interview, whatever. When people see that you no longer care or worry about your stutter, they respect that more. When they respect you, they no longer care about your stutter. It’s just the way you happen to talk. The stutter is no longer the focal point for you or them, the conversation, the words you are using, the content is what they are listening to. They respect you. Yes they hear the stutter but you are leading by example, showing them to look past it the way you are. Once you are at this point and at ease while talking, with no anxiety, just acceptance, your stutter will decrease. Maybe noticeably maybe not noticeably. The cruel joke though is that by this point you aren’t cheering that you have mastered your stammer, as you truly don’t care. I promise this was the truth for me and I hope if you are the one person that needed to read this, that it is the case for you also.
