I enjoyed reading your post! I also believe that the process of healing for stuttering anxiety is more effectively done through professional help, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as you have mentioned. But do think comments such as “Don’t let stuttering hold you back in life” at the very least are encouraging. These comments at least let us know that others support us and have our back, so in that sense, it is a constructive phrase. It’s cool that you mentioned the idea that overcoming ourself can have a big meaning in our life. For myself I think I give a lot of value to overcoming myself, and feel shame when I don’t face a fear or give a challenge all I’ve got. I’m trying to find the answer, of whether someone can feel valuable if they choose to not fight back against their own perceived weaknesses. As a Christian, I know God says that our weakness is made into strength through Him. But I still find myself feeling inadequate at the end of the day if I didn’t do something to “level up” or do something that makes me feel courageous. As far as you being fluent in a new city, I think there may be something you might have overlooked but not sure. And the implications might help you with your journey with stuttering...When you went to that new city, your brain had a blank slate of associations with the city. So you almost showed up as a new person. And since you had almost no expectations for yourself, your brain immediately started filling the blank space with positive experiences, which helped you begin to socialize with more ease. Which then helped your stuttering decrease to zero. The implication is that in your hometown, you have many anxiety-producing experiences and negative expectations for yourself in your hometown. This is what made you fluent in the new city and stutter in your hometown. It wasn’t just fluency that gave you confidence. It was a blank mind in a new city that allowed the perfect ecosystem, in a sense, for positivity to grow in you. So I think living in the current moment and being mindful in your hometown will almost turn your brain into a blank slate once again, allowing you to begin speaking fluently again in any city you are in. That coupled with tons of positive affirmations, getting rid of any resentments; reframing memories to be more positive. And creating new positive experiences. But maybe this would just be conquering yourself again, which you don’t want to do?... Let me know what you think of this. Great post. How much meaning we give to conquering ourself directly or conquering ourself by accepting defeat really influences our journey with stuttering.
