Community builds acceptance. Meeting other people who stutter builds normalcy in our speech. We represent 1% of the population and are constantly surrounded by people who talk differently than us. This creates negative thoughts in our mind of how our speech SHOULD be when in fact, our speech is perfectly fine. I've found stuttering to be more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge and that's why my community has been so helpful to not only myself but also other PWS within it. This has been huge in my journey to acceptance. It's no easy task, especially when our brains are wired to perceive our stutter in a certain way. I'm a PWS who experiences severe blocks and avoidance behaviors. I agree - it's hard to say what we really want and that's why at work when I get a chance to speak, I make it count because I know it's hard for me to talk for a long time.
