So I’ve just stumbled across this post thought I’d put my 2 cents in. I’m a member of the McGuire programme. It never claims to be a cure, or a quick fix. What it does though is give you techniques to firstly control your stammer, but most importantly for me, is that it teaches you to face the fear of stuttering and accept your self as a stammerer. None of this switching words or soft contacts rubbish, they just make you hide away and the fear gets bigger. If you face and overcome your fear of spiders. The spiders are still there, you’re just not scared of them anymore. That’s what they mean by overcoming stuttering. It is a big commitment, daily breathing warmups, using technique every day, but it’s like a sport. If you like tennis but don’t practice serves, back and forehand, volleys etc, you’re never going to win. A fast serve alone won’t win you the match. As for fees, just to clarify. The lifetime membership gives you your first intensive course, access to a global list of coaches for free coaching calls, free zoom support groups etc. Support is literally available 24x7 because of the global reach. I’ve spoken to people in Dubai, Australia, UK… there is no time limit to that access, it’s a lifetime membership. If you choose to stick to those support models, you’ll never pay anything else once you’ve joined. The only time you pay additional fees is if you attend another course (the fee is a fraction of the price and just helps towards the cost of the meeting room), or if you attend one of the local in person support groups. These local groups are only a couple of pounds and again it helps to pay for the meeting room. The coaches are volunteers, it’s not about making money. Within those in person support groups you get the opportunity to stand up and run sessions, get guidance on your speech and help reduce the fear of speaking - so well worth it in my eyes. If you become a coach you don’t have to pay the course grad fees because you’re giving your time to help others. If you’re after a cure then the McGuire Programme isn’t for you. If you’re looking for something sustainable and proven to help 1000s of others, give it a go! I’ve been on the programme 6 years, probably attended 15 courses and it’s the only thing that’s helped my stammer. You also go back to catch up with friends you’ve made on the programme, it’s a really inclusive environment. I tried so many other avenues because the initial cost did put me off. I just wish I did it years before.
