That's kinda what stuttering is for a lot of us. One of my former speech therapists used the term "secondaries" to refer to these habits. It's the things we do in our attempt to get past the block. My two big ones are clearing my throat and opening my mouth very wide. Basically extending my jaw as far as it can go. Very jerky and spastic as well. Kinda looks like a mouth seizure, if that makes any sense. I believe the throat clearing began as a way to try and stop it from happening. And I think the mouth opening started as a way to try and overcome a block + secondary in my childhood. Oh and I used to say, "Um uh" at the start of every sentence and during every block. God I really hated that one.
