You must've had some real shitty speech pathologists then... I feel for you. I've never heard these from a therapist aside from rhythm tapping (which I still use in various ways today.) It helped me greatly to tap because it slowed my speech and helped me become more fluent on a consistent basis once I learned how to adapt it to my personal preference.
