How long until your speech therapist wanted you using what you learned in speech therapy in public?

How long until your speech therapist wanted you using what you learned in speech therapy in public? I'm curious... I see a wide array of experiences with speech therapy here. How much time did you work with your speech therapist before they encouraged you to use what you were learning with them with other people outside of your speech therapy sessions?
