[Asking] General Questions and Speech Therapy Handbook Recommendations? Hi guys I am a long time stutterer that started stuttering around start of elementary school (till now \~14 yrs, maybe more) and have been lurking here for quite some time. Now as I am having some free time I am determined to do more in improving my stuttering, and hence I come asking for advice from people who are, ehhh, more experienced...? **My stuttering is polarized in severity and mostly mood affected**: When I am nervous, I stutter a lot (>10times/minute) and block very hard; but when I am talking to someone casually or to someone I trust won't judge me for my speech, I barely ever stutter(10\~60 times/hour) and all the stutters are very mild (to the point that none of my friends can notice anything abnormal); **My stutter symptoms are mostly blocks in starting words**: For example, when I am speaking, sometimes I just simply cannot pronounce the first letter of a random word, which in turn leads to blocking and increased anxiety; I recorded my daily routine for about a week and found no statistically significant information on what words or sounds I have trouble starting. **Here are my questions**: 1. I am currently not using any techniques in altering words even if I know I am going to stutter on it. I know altering words/sentences may improve my speech but I felt like doing so is *cheating myself*? What do you guys think? Should I just face the blockings and hope that it goes away with practice or should I try some techniques? 2. I overheard on this sub that there are some devices like "Speakeasy" that can help with stuttering. The problem is they cost a fortune (\~4000$ and no refunds if it doesn't work, oof...) and I am not sure if they even work? I have tried DAF and AAF from my phone and I found them very distracting, to say the least. 3. Can anyone recommend some speech therapy books/websites/resources/academic\_papers that helped with their stuttering? 4. Does speech therapy really help? If so, how? Do they simply teach you again the fundamentals of speech? I heard polarizing claims about therapy, with some people saying they nearly work and some standing by them completely. 5. Considering my stuttering is most induced by anxiety and sometimes social phobia, should I consider dealing with these issues first? (tbh I don't know if my stuttering is caused by social phobia or social phobia caused my stuttering. I was too young to remember anything when I started stuttering, and have been in this situation ever since. ) 6. For a time I believed that if one day I suddenly forgot I stutter, then I probably won't stutter anymore... Does this sound like nonsense/naive self indoctrination? Because in the way I see it, I don't stutter when I am speaking to myself, nor do I stutter when I am not anxious and not thinking of stuttering. Most of my stuttering starts with the thought "omfg what if I stutter that's so embarrassing I must not stutter...", and we all know what happens afterwards :( . Sorry guys I know this is a long list and a huge favor to ask of, but any help related is really appreciated. Thanks in advance! Sorry that there may be some incoherencies/typos but it's like 5 am now (couldn't sleep thinking about stuttering) and I am really too tired to fix them. Sorry.
