It can be tough sometimes. I stutter since birth. I'm 23 now, and although my stutter is also mild, I still do have some bad episodes like the one you just described. I usually transfer all the tension onto my eyes, and people just look at me weirdly for having my eyes wide open, but few know the reason behind it. Stay strong.
