It kind of makes sense. Stuttering and such don't impede us to the same degree as loss of sight, hearing, mobility, etc. But even with the more severe disabilities, companies don't make considerations for these disabilities unless they are forced to. Laws require the multistory office buildings have elevators so disabled people have access. I worked in an older two story building. We got a waiver from the city. We basically promised to make reasonable accommodations for employees who can't navigate the stairs. What accommodations would you like to see? TTY/TTD is already available for the deaf. A lot of what impedes stutterers is psychological. Anxiety, stress, etc. The stutter, in itself, often isn't our primary challenge. Don't get me wrong, I've been hung up on when my block was bad, and they thought I was pranking or such on the phone. I know the frustration first hand. Furthermore, stuttering is treatable / correctable for many. I wish there was better support for finding effective treatment for more of us. In my experience, inadequate treatment leads to frustration. It erodes our faith in the idea of treatment. We begin to believe that we can't improve our fluency. With regards to phone trees and such... I've worked quality control at call centers. Call centers are just going to get worse. Most companies now hire outside companies to provide call center services. You're communicating with the lowest bid that struggles to meet the minimum requirements. I don't view it as a disability. But that's just my opinion. I completely respect another's opinion that it is a disability. Fact is, many countries recognize severe stuttering as a disability. Regardless, accommodations should be made when there is a need. Sometimes accommodations are available and we're not aware of them. I have a teenage son with a physical disability, and we're always learning about accommodations available that we weren't aware of. Sorry to hijack your rant. I feel you. truly.
