If by avoid you mean hiding it on purpose, you don't. As difficult as it may be just be yourself and do not try to hide it. Years down the road you will be much happier about the way you feel about yourself. All the people that seem so important to you at the age of 16 will not be important to you at all in a few years. Stand up and be proud!
