I attended marital counselling with my husband. I just went to a woman who was highly recommended on Facebook when I asked a moms group about marital counsellors. Anyways, we arrive to her acreage where we see a giant, beautiful house and she has a 2 story shop that has been made into her “office” it was gorgeous. She sits us down and soon into the conversation we realize, that like myself, she stutters. The session continues and there is a giant noise. She gets up and looks out the window so naturally our gaze follows, she says “sorry, my husband is just bringing the boat in from the lake for the season” outside was the most beautiful boat I have ever seen pulling into another shop to the right. The point is, before this moment, I had assumed that due to stuttering my life was “doomed” to be mediocre. I didn’t expect that someone could be a therapist, counsellor or any job that revolved around speaking because who would want to listen to someone like that? But yet, this woman, with her stutter, was the most recommended marital counsellor in the city I lived in. She was lovely. It was inspirational.
