I am portuguese and I stutter. When I was going to speech therapy a few years ago I had the chance to meet Joacine, she was the first woman I met who stuttered (I am a woman) and we shared the same speech therapist. She is an amazing person and I’ve had the chance to chat with her during her campaign and told her we actually had met years before and that it had an great impact on me. Also told her how important what she is doing is for people who stutter and society in general. On a sadder note people are criticizing her a lot, bullying her. It’s horrifying how awful people can be. So many fake news spread saying she was faking her stutter for attention and for the campaign, simply because in some speeches she stutters less than in others. People are so ignorant. It actually hurts me so much reading comments people make on social media. She is super strong, I wouldn’t last a day in her shoes. In spite of this, she has support! The other day people united outside the parliament to manifest support for her, I went! Stuttering has never been so talked about in my country, it’s strange but so necessary!
