How often do people tell you 'I used to stutter, I get it'... I feel like most of the people I encounter, that mention my stutter, end up telling me that they either used to stutter or that they still do. These are people that are fluent, don't show any tics, and don't have any cadence or rhythm changes to their speech that indicate a stutter. And yet, it seems that everyone wants to tell me that they went through it, they understand it, speech therapy helped them, or that they simply grew out of it. And I can't lie, it makes me a bit bitter. Probably because I feel like they're downplaying what is a daily struggle for me. I understand they're trying to relate, and maybe make me feel more at ease, but what it really does it make me feel like they're invalidating my stutter and the impact on my life. They think pausing to think of a word is a struggle, but they don't get the feeling I have in my throat, and the impact on my breathing, and the way my mind races trying to figure out if I should breathe different...should have paused somewhere else...is there a different word... Does anyone else experience this?
