We are a research team working with MIT/Northeastern University professors and SLPs who study speech to explore assistive devices for people who stutter. We are researching new audio-based strategies that are different than prior-studied altered auditory feedback (AAF) strategies (like pitch shift, delay, and choral speech). Here's a bit about our prior research: We did a previous 1-session study in which we found that whispered (voiceless sound), reverberated (cathedral sound) and harmonized (robotic sound) auditory feedback are significantly more effective than traditional AAF methods for increasing speech fluency for people who stutter. Following this study, we developed a free app called Mumble Melody containing these auditory feedback options, which can be download on the Apple app store. Currently, it requires wired headphones and is available in the US. Here's a bit about our current research study: We are now running a 1-month online clinical study using Mumble Melody, in order to explore the longer-term impact of different audio-based strategy on stuttered speech. Eligible participants are adults who stutter (18+) who live in the United States. We are sending wired headphones and up to $70 for participation. The link to participate is here: [https://redcap.link/mumblemelodystudy](https://redcap.link/mumblemelodystudy) The longer-term effects of Mumble Melody auditory feedback modes are yet to be fully understood, and we don't guarantee enduring effectiveness at this stage. However, we hypothesize that varying auditory feedback modalities, combined with a user-customizable platform, may contribute to longer-term improvements in speech fluency.
