Fellow stutterers, what do you do when someone makes a joke of your stutter? I am 19F, had a stutter all my life. After 19 years of age, I still don’t know what to say when I stutter and someone repeats my stutter laughing, or when you stutter and they make a snarky comment. I am actually studying Speech and Language Therapy at uni, and ironically, on my first day I was talking to a girl who was on my course, I stammered when saying a word and she went “w-w-word” laughing, and my body tensed up and I felt like I had been striked (like every time) I’m just interested, how do you guys handle people who are being arseholes, or people who make a joke thinking they’re funny but not realising you have a stutter? I think the whole entire time I’ve stuttered, there’s only been two times someone has made a comment and I’ve gone to them “I have a speech impediment” mainly because of my anxiety I feel so mean to people.
