I can't speak for a job as a receptionist, but my dad knows someone who is a 911 operator, and he allegedly has a pretty severe stammer. And if you can be a 911 operator as a stutterer, you can definitely be a receptionist. I think it's worth that you give it a shot if you need a job. I think the key to making any job work with a stammer is that you're open about it. I've gotten very postitive feedback when I approach new people (including employers) by straight up telling them: "I stutter so I might need some extra time to say what I need to say." A lot of people have the misconception that you're stuttering because you're nervous, when it's exactly the opposite. Being open about it clears up confusion, and also shows that you're open about your stammer and willing to talk about it. A big sign of maturity. As for the job itself. I can't imagine myself ever going for a very social job like a receptionist job with my stutter, but I certainly think it's doable. Find a phrase to answer the phone that works for you. If you find saying your name difficult (as I do), maybe you could avoid using your name when people call the desk? "You called X, how may I help you?" etc. Also, the key is breathing. When you're about to start a sentence, take a deep breath, and start speaking as you exhale. This of course isn't easy if a phone rings and you need to answer it asap, but it's worth to keep in mind. I also learned some other techniques I learned in speech therapy I could send your way. I understand exactly how your stammer makes you feel. Been there myself, and still fight every day not to go back there. I think the only advice I can give you, is to use your anger to go forward. I started thinking to myself "Do I want to let this speech impediment utterly control my life?". I started to antagonize my stammer, and used that as fuel. It definitely helped me get over some of the biggest hurdles.
