As we are approaching the end of 2024 - do you feel you’ve made any progress with your stammer, and if so, what? For me, I started speech therapy at the beginning of this year and went from having a severe blocking stammer with many many avoidance behaviours such as, not using the phone unless I have to, getting other people to speak for me etc, to having a whole kit of techniques to help me during struggling moments and the tools to help desensitise me to many of my fears. Since starting speech therapy, some of my biggest milestones have been - 1. Greater fluency in general. Not perfect of course, but that’s because you can only MANAGE your stammer to a certain extent. There’s a level of acceptance that stammering moments will happen and that’s okay! 2. The ability to control about 85% of my secondary behaviours such as facial tics and grimacing which had turned into the driving force of my stammer. Again… sometimes, these do still crop up but I’m learning to accept them. 3. I have went from rarely making phone calls… at work (as a salesman) I went from making no more than 10 calls a week to sometimes 25 calls a day! I have also began doing voicenotes too and actually prefer calling to texting now!! 4. I now order food for myself at restaurants, even if i do have momentary blocking moments. 5. For the first time in my life, I have started using the drive-thru each time I go to McDonald’s, or Starbucks! This was my biggest thing I would avoid. For years and years I have never used a drive thru, until this year!! All in all, I feel I’ve made significant progress this year, but it’s a constant work-in-progress! I’d like to hear about your positive moments of this year.
