The main thing getting a job helped me with was making me realize that most people really don't care that you stutter. I worked at a fancy country club and assumed all the rich old people were going to be super mean, and some were, but most of them were indifferent at worst, and some were super nice and would even take the time to chat with me on the way out. It didn't really help the stutter itself much but it sort of planted the seed to break the social anxiety.
