A simple yet effective roadmap to manage and gradually overcome stammering As promised to a lot of members who asked me to write a post about stammering, so here it is: Hi to all fellow stammerers, I am from India and currently working as a software engineer at a startup. I have been stammering since childhood, and now I am 23. Throughout these years, I have faced many problems that I consider as by-products of stammering. I won't waste much time and will try my best to write about what I have done and am currently doing to tackle stammering. I want to clarify that I am not a doctor and I don't have extensive knowledge in speech therapy or related fields. Therefore, everything I share is based on my own experiences and learnings. I believe that if I can overcome stammering, anyone can. Furthermore, this is not the only method to manage stammering. It's just the method that worked for me, and I wanted to contribute something to the community. I have been an active participant in The Indian Stammering Association for 2-3 years, which has taught me a lot, and I would like to share those lessons. Step 1: Have faith that stammering can eventually be managed, overcome, or that there are better things to look forward to in life despite stammering. Trust me, please believe me, with time, you will realize it on your own. Step 2: Make prolongation your biggest weapon. Prolongation is a simple and effective technique to speak words when you stammer. It helps to calm your speech and improves articulation. Let's see how you can start practicing it. For example, if you have difficulty speaking your name, let's take "Yathaarth" as an example. To prolong it, focus on elongating the starting letters, "y" and "a." It should be pronounced as "yaaaathaarth." Now, many people might say that it won't work in public situations. To those individuals, I want to say, have faith in it and don't underestimate its effectiveness. If you sincerely follow this technique, it can work wonders for you. Let's consider another example: suppose you want to say the sentence, "You look very good in this outfit," and you anticipate stammering on the words "look" and "outfit." To deal with this, say it like this: "You looook very good in this ouuutfit." Again, this might not be how natural speakers talk, but believe me, this is just the initial stage. With practice, you will gain more control over prolongation and be able to adjust it according to the demands of each situation. Treat it like a sport, learn the technique, start with a lower level, and with time, you will become a master of this technique. Step 3: Once you have developed your weapon, it's time to practice using it in real-life scenarios. One of the biggest challenges, especially with stammering, is that it requires speaking in different situations, yet many people practice alone. Practicing alone is like playing a sport by yourself—it's not very useful unless you play with someone else to improve. Start using prolongation with your friends, family members, yourself, your pet, your colleagues, and so on. Practice has no end, and you should maximize it every day by talking with everyone. Every person is an opportunity to improve your technique and become better at speaking. Practice, practice, speak, speak, speak, and integrate this technique into your subconscious mind. Let it become ingrained in your brain. Step 4: After some time, let's say around 6 months of practice (depending on your efforts), your mind will automatically develop a habit of speaking in a controlled manner. You are the master of your speech—you can speak quickly without prolonging any words or deliberately prolong some words for practice. Believe me, this phase is magical but also very dangerous. You will realize that you have gained the power to speak anything you want, anywhere you want, and as a result, you may start speaking with less prolongation. This is dangerous because stammering has been a part of your life for many years, and your mind might try to bring it back. Step 5: Keep sharpening your technique. You might feel that you no longer need to use the technique, but believe me, your mind might try to revert to old habits of stammering. So, I suggest that you speak normally whenever you want, but also keep revising the technique to remind your mind that you're in control and won't allow stammering to resurface. Stay one step ahead of your mind. Step 6: Keep exploring and helping other stammerers who are struggling with their communication skills. That's all there is to it. It's not very complicated and can be easily done. Believe me, give it a try, and you will start enjoying it. Here are some ways to practice: Although there are unlimited ways to engage in conversations, I suggest a few that ensure you practice in different situations: 1. Toastmasters 2. TISA (The Indian Stammering Association) 3. Try hosting events or activities you come across 4. Become more extroverted, start asking questions, and take an interest in talking with strangers. Last, but not least, feel free to ask me any doubt related to it and I will be happy to help.
