lessons and positive side effects of stuttering Hi everyone, I'm 21 years old and I've been struggling with stuttering for as long as I can remember. These last years I've come to see a few beneficial impacts stuttering has had on my life and I wanted to share one. In the first social contacts I have with people, at first, some think I don't speak the language I'm communicating in and ask if I want to speak in another one, some think I'm stupid and some think I'm mentally disabled or something. This and other aspects of stuttering makes you realise that you really can't control your social image, the way people see you. This is of course true for everyone but I think it applies espacially to people that stutter. You really can't control how people will think of you, when someone thinks something or says something about me that is not true and too complicated to explain to them why it's not, I just let it go and accept I can't control it. This ability of letting go has helped me in many other ways. It allows me to go into social roles I don't necessarily relate to that can have positive outcomes for me. For example, people will likely think or feel they are somewhat superior or above you and that you are someone that needs to be helped. They might not think it like that but I think I can feel it in their general attitude. Stuttering triggers sympathy and empathy and people will want to help you. Not specifically in your stuttering (although it happens of course) but in other aspects also. If you're willing to accept that people feel some paternal want to help you it can be really great and you can get a lot of help and social connection. People might think you are weaker and you won't seem as a threat. For me it's nice to be underestimated, people have less expectations and I can impress them. But this only is positive for me if I can remember and know that I am not the image of me they have in their head :) I know who I am and it's okay if they don't see it. I'm using some hard words and I think they are right but in a mess harsher way. I hope what I wrote is somewhat understandable. Have a good day
