>The avoidances...not speaking in class, at work are all reinforcing the fear of stuttering. It will be in baby steps but try avoiding less. Going outside your comfort zone is key and it will decrease your fear and anxiety. Fluency can be a byproduct of this. I read a lot about the avoidance, but I have to disagree with this. I do not believe it to be true (coming from a stutterer who quit college because I couldn't speak). Stuttering and the fear of stuttering solely reinforces the stutter. For me, I believe that putting yourself in uncomfortable situations where you can and will make a fool of yourself is the worst possible thing for most stutterers. If one keeps publicly embarrassing themselves, it's can lead to many other worse things. Avoid ALL pressure situations (when possible). Speak ONLY in stutter-friendly environments (when possible). If you know your going to stutter/block, do not speak! Save yourself and your well-being from the misery.
