Voluntary stuttering is the practice of stuttering on purpose. The idea is to get you more comfortable with stuttering and letting your body know it's ok to stutter. In theory, you become more in control of your stutter rather than your stutter controlling you. You stutter in your own terms. You can start by doing it by yourself then slowly work up to do it in other scenarios. I was very afraid to do it. It took me 2 years to even try it, and I eventually had to reach out to an SLP to help me to do it. I had a panic attack the first time i tried it. But it gets easier. Now, if I get in a bad block and I feel like I am losing control, sometimes I purposefully block harder for a second or so, and it helps me gain control of the situation and my thoughts. Before, I would go into a downward spiral when I hit a bad block, and I would be paralyzed in a sense, and I had no control of my actions or thoughts. In my experience, therapy is more effective when we are desensitized and more accepting of stuttering moments.
