I thought that he learned sign language because of the stutter in general and he usually just acts like he cannot speak instead of struggling with the stammer. He was under great pressure before he met the woman though, because he wanted to be serious in their relationship and he knew he could not hide it from her when they finally met (the same way the woman hid about being deaf over chat)
