I am 20 years old and have had a mild-severe stutter for as long as I can remember. I was put in speech therapy in 2nd grade, and stopped middle of 8th. Roughly 6 years of speech therapy. Here's the list. 1.) No one ever actually \*explained\* that the weird thing my voice did wasn't supposed to happen. `Explain this.` No one, regardless of age, can work on a problem if they don't know it exists. Make sure the person knows that their speech impediment is a physical issue that can be treated and trained out of. 2.) My "speech therapist" did nothing but have us play games of uno or read Dr. Seuss books while telling me to "sLoW DoWN, aNd BrEaTH" for 6 years. I do not remember learning a single stutter control method from her at all. 3.) I don't know what my parents ever thought of my stutter. My dad has a very slight one when he gets interrupted or his train of thought derailed. I think they didn't know what to think and made the fair assumption of trusting the school speech therapist. So the topic of me having a stutter never came up. So when I was in middle school, while the other kids were going through normal middle school stuff, **I FIGURED OUT I HAD A DISABILITY.** After I realized that I had disability called a stutter, I started to do some research and saw just how utterly useless that "speech therapist" was. I stopped going in 8th grade and began trying to get fluent on my own. Now I'm 20 and am kinda there. Anyway, I hope this helps!
