It’s so cool seeing all these varied careers on this post! I’m in library science, I’ve finished my BA in English Lit and am currently pursuing my MA in Library Science. It’s... tough. I would consider myself a moderate stutterer, formerly severe. In my field, you have a range of positions that will influence how much you need to speak. Unfortunately for me, all the positions I’m interested in (public & academic libraries) are customer focused. All the jobs I’ve had thus far have been basic desk clerk stuff so it’s more basic conversation and problem solving. But once I become an actual librarian I will need to do outreach, possibly teaching, etc. I still stutter, and mine is anxiety induced so it happens often. I gotta just roll with honey! I do some breathing exercises, think about what I’m saying before saying it, and I do this weird snapping thing that forces me to get the words out. Even with all of that, every person who works with me will say I’m bubbly, talkative, etc. Yes, I stutter but my personality overshadows all of that! I still have low low days where it gets me depressed, especially if my anxiety is high which causes my stutter to get severe. Like many other commenters have said, OWN IT! I am 24 and only until this year did I really start getting comfortable with myself. I’ve even started to tell people that I stutter before speaking and it’s helped ease some of my fear/anxiety.
