Please try to see that there are different types/intensities of stutters. 1. Repetitions/prolongations that smoothly transition to your next sound. 2. More frequent repetitions/prolongations that cause you distress. 3. Repetitions/prolongations are less frequent bc many have turned into blocks, accompanied by a wide range of anxiety-based avoidance behaviors (eye contact avoidance , word switching, avoiding sentences/entire interactions). Odd body movements, lots of panic. If someone is at 3 and is told to accept it (without context!), it’s a heartbreaking feeling . When I was at 3, I “ignored” my broken heat/hot water in the dead of New England winter bc I was so scared to call and *give my address*. It took me a few days to build up the courage. I regularly avoided entire situations, gave up mid sentence, pretended to have forgotten/changed my mind, ordered food I did not want, had panic attacks when phone rang, etc etc. (I have a BA degree, and just the year before, worked as a mental health professional for young children.)
