I definitely stray while stuttering. It's part of the look of stuttering because it is very hard to break that habit. I think it's best no to be hard on ourselves for it. I used to think it was purely a tiny escape - all that is possible in that moment. It also makes sense that we don't want to see the possible confusion on the faces of the people we are speaking to. Nowadays it feels like a moment where I'm trying to remember to slow down and utilize some of the devices I know to get past the block. I'm sure it's a combination of all of it. What I actively try to do is at least return my eyes to them quickly after the block. I think it's also important to remember that MANY non-stuttering people have a hard time with eye contact, just like MANY non-stuttering people struggle with fluency in some way.
