I never said it was the speech therapist job to address these issues. Some people have misinterpreted that from what I said. I’m sure some do address this but the majority of them do not. At least that’s true from my experience. I was making a point that you can learn all the cool little speaking techniques that you want, some of which truly help people, but that you will never get past what’s truly holding you back in life until you address the mental issues that come with stuttering. I understand the true definition of being “cured” will not be achieved for most people. It certainly did not happen for me. But i consider myself “cured” in a sense. So my point is that, i was never told this in any therapy I ever attended. I was just told to do these exercises and practice this many times a week and that was the extent. I know this is true for many of the people I have spoken to over the years. So while it might not be the experience for every single person, it is a common one. And I will give you that it’s out of their purview, but I think it is a very important aspect to consider as a speech therapist. A lot of times, the route of the cause is not all about breathing techniques and slowing down vowel sounds.
